"Textual Criticism and Qur'an Manuscripts" will certainly be an essential reference for anyone working in the field of the history of the written text of the Qur'an. It will also be a good primer on the current status of Qur'anic textual studies for laypeople as well as religious scholars who wish to learn more about the earliest manuscripts of /5(10).   I’ve recently reviewed a fascinating book: Keith E. Small, Textual Criticism and Qur’an Manuscripts (Lanham/Boulder/New York/Toronto/Plymouth: Lexington Books, ), the review appearing in Scottish Journal of Theology in due course. The book arises from Small’s PhD thesis, and is an impressive and stimulating work.

Textual criticism must be practiced on the biblical books because there is no one manuscript, or group of manuscripts, that perfectly preserve the original reading. Yet, we do believe that it is possible to discover what the authors originally wrote. If the Qur'an truly is uncorrupted, why does the Muslim world not publish the oldest Qur'an manuscripts? What is there to hide? Textual criticism of Bible and Qur'an; 7. Objections. How could John Burton say the Qur'an was perfectly preserved? 8. Other. The Claim of Muhammad's Perfect Memory; Scribal and Grammatical Errors in the Qur'an.

In response to a well-known examination of the historical problems of The Koran, written before by Toby Lester in The Atlantic, Seyyed Hossein Nasr said The acceptance of the Koran as the word of God suggests that the so-called historical and textual study of the Koran is tantamount to questioning the historical existence of Jesus Christ, as some people in the Author: David Layman. So now we have two principles that of scientific textual criticism that are used to decide the textual reliability of any old book: 1) measuring the time between original writing and earliest existing manuscript copies, and 2) counting the number of existing manuscript copies.
